On my Wix, I already talked about all of the outfit and character designs I had for Abel. But now it was time to do the full turn-around.

At the start, I felt a little bit nervous. I wanted to make sure that I had it in a style that could be easily translated to pixel art for when it was time to make the spirits for Abel, especially as we would need to make a lot of them.

This led to me looking around on Google to see if there were any bases that could help me with the overall look, as I have never done a design like this. It took a while, especially as I wanted to make sure I was using free-to-use (F2U) bases so there was no copyrighting or infringement. Sadly, this image didn’t have an original poster for me to credit, but this is the image I used to help me start somewhere.

It had the look I needed for it to be tall enough for detail, but more in a ‘chibi’ style that would let me also have it a bit more simplified and sweet. Knowing that it was F2U meant I could get to work on the base sketch for the turnaround. I opened up Clip Studio Paint and got to work.

As you can see, I started with the sketch and would then take the front, flip it to get the idea of the back, and then edit it to really look like it was the back of Abel. The hardest part was the two side views, mostly because I gave Abel asymmetric hair, so it meant I had to essentially re-sketch the hair to be able to make sure it fit the original design. I was really happy with how it was turning out and would make sure that it was even by having the classic ‘lines in the back’ to make sure when it went into sprite creation, we had covered all bases and it would be easy to make the idle sprite from this image.

This is the final turnaround for Abel. The colouring was the most arduous since Abel has very specific hair with the gradient, but overall, it came together quite quickly and I was able to get most of the lines to line up with the other models well! I feel like I could get better with this if I continue to work on turnaround sheets in the future, but for my first one in a while, I feel quite confident that anyone could look at it and know how the character is supposed to look.

To make sure I was keeping the Solum account live, I then posted it on there to showcase the character! I also posted using my Dev account because this is the account I will continue to use, even after this project is done! It was really fun to do and I can’t wait to do more like this.
